Cal State University San Marcos
Cal State SM is not the only college located in this town but it is the only Cal State option. Attracting a lot of CA residents as well as out of state applicants the area has a demand for more. With the growth of the college, San Marcos has seen a rapid development of mixed use commercial and residential building, bringing a more lively and hip vibe to the scene. However, the city does still have that small town vibe if you want it. You just have to know where to find it.
Lake San Marcos
Not for swimming but bring your hat and sunnies for a day on a pontoon or for brunch at the Lakehouse resort which has a restaurant right on the water. This artificial reservoir was originally created for irrigation purposes and to water cattle. Now it is strictly used for commercial and recreational purposes. So check it out for a day of fun or a staycation.
San Elijo Hills Downtown
A place is just that place. With its charming vibes of nature mixed with modern conveniences nearby, it is much slower than its surrounding areas. Nestled in the hills of San Marcos, this family friendly neighborhood has a lot of fun outdoor trails, farmers markets and holiday gatherings making it a vibrant place to be and perfect place to live. And if you’re up for some spooky-ness mixed with history you can take a drive out to see Elfin Forest, aka Questhaven. This area is said to have some strong spiritual vibes or possibly could even be haunted.
